ERL Vamps in Chocolate Brown: The Venice Beach Sneaker, Now in Its Richest Colorway Yet

Eli Russell Linnetz has never designed for a hypothetical customer. His label ERL dresses characters — protagonists in an ongoing cinematic universe set in Venice Beach, rendered in the saturated, sun-bleached palette of an American dream that's equal parts boardwalk and backlot. The Los Angeles Times recently described Linnetz's practice in exactly those terms: fashion as theater, with all of us merely players in his movie.

That framing matters when you consider the ERL Vamps, because this is not a sneaker built to be a neutral staple. It's a costume piece. A character choice. And now — in Chocolate Brown — it arrives in its most quietly confident form to date.

A Silhouette With Boardwalk DNA

The Vamps carries the genetic code of the footwear Linnetz grew up watching on actual Venice skaters: low-slung, vulcanized, unpretentious in shape but loaded with attitude. What separates it from a standard skate shoe is the detailing. The upper is built from plush suede and canvas, paneled in a way that recalls vintage court sneakers and the kind of beat-up trainers that lived in the trunk of a car parked off Ocean Front Walk.

Then there's the color. Chocolate Brown is the headline here — a deep, warm, almost edible brown that reads less like a seasonal trend and more like a deliberate mood. It's the color of worn leather, of 1970s California interiors, of the specific brown that appears in Linnetz's photographs when the sun drops low. Against the shoe's cream midsole and tonal laces, it feels rich without being precious.

Nostalgic and Forward at Once

This is the tension ERL manages better than almost any young American label: garments and accessories that are simultaneously nostalgic and forward, accessible and aspirational, ironic and sincere. The brand's recent cultural footprint proves the point. Custom ERL appeared on the MTV VMAs red carpet this year, with Sombr wearing a faux-fur jacket and slogan belt that turned the awards show into another scene in Linnetz's ongoing production. A Deacon Phillippe campaign and a Ben Platt shoot have kept the label in the celebrity conversation, and the Spring 2027 and Fall 2026 collections reviewed by Vogue confirm that the theatrical instinct is not a phase — it's the entire operating system.

From the Boardwalk to the Atelier

What's notable about the Vamps is how it distills that instinct into something you can actually wear every day. It is, functionally, a skate sneaker. It is, culturally, a piece of ERL world-building. The Chocolate Brown edition sits at the intersection of both, and it slots naturally into the brand's expanding universe, which now includes womenswear via "The Island" and a high-profile design partnership with Dior that produced the B9S skater sneaker and the B23 high-top. Linnetz has spent years proving he can operate at luxury scale; the Vamps is the reminder that his heart remains on the boardwalk.

Who It's For

It's for the person who understands that a sneaker can function as a scene-stealer, who wants footwear with a point of view rather than a logo, and who appreciates that the most interesting American fashion right now is being made by someone who treats a shoe like a supporting character. It's also, frankly, for anyone who has been waiting for a brown sneaker that doesn't look like a compromise — this one looks like a decision.

Now available online, the ERL Vamps in Chocolate Brown is the rare release that satisfies both the collector tracking Linnetz's every move and the skater who simply needs a shoe that holds up. That dual audience is the whole point. In Linnetz's movie, everyone gets a costume — and this is one of the best ones yet.
